Definition and advantages

It is a term used to explain the movement of people from one place to another including the activities of them from the time of arrival to the time of departure for a period not exceeding than one year  for a major purpose.  Tourism has various types and forms we are going to explain it in the rest of this article, The importance of tourism lies in the economic and social benefits,  it contributes in the promotion of economic development and in the linking between cultures and communities together by the dissemination of knowledge between them, in addition to the business supporting.

Types of tourism by destinations

International tourism

Means travel of individuals outside the borders of the country and entering the borders of another country, this type of tourism requires entry/exit visas, passports, in addition to the applicable/allowed currency, this kind of tourism must lead to learning the customs, traditions and culture of the country to avoid embarrassing situations, or unintentionally hurting other cultures.

International tourism is divided into outbound and inbound tourism. Outbound tourism includes people traveling from one country to another The inbound tourism include people coming from one country to another.

Domestic tourism

Domestic tourism is the tourism that means the movement of people within the borders of their country and visiting touristic places, which means that they do not need a visa to for entering another country, and no need to use their passports just using their national ID card, no need to the conversion of the currency, The duration of domestic tourism may be one day or more. 

The benefits of the domestic tourism have positive effects on the internal economics of the country by supporting the business of this industry. This kind of tourism may be easier because tourists know their country’s laws, language and customs.

Types of tourism by the activity

Adventure Tourism

Adventure tourism is a type of niche tourism involving exploration or travel to remote areas, where the traveler should expect the unexpected. Adventure tourism is rapidly growing in popularity as tourists seek unusual holidays, different from the typical beach vacation. Mountaineering expeditions, trekking, bungee jumping, rafting and rock climbing are frequently cited as an examples of adventure tourism.

Cultural Tourism

Cultural tourism is based on visiting other cultures, learning their own customs and traditions, integrating with different communities, sharing information about different cultures around the world, and promoting their culture and distinction among global communities.

Religious Tourism

also commonly referred to as faith tourism, is a type of tourism, where people travel individually or in groups for pilgrimage, missionary, or leisure (fellowship) purposes.. Modern religious tourists are more able to visit holy cities and holy sites around the world.

Medical tourism

Based on travel to a particular place for the purpose of a medical treatment due to illness, health care, dental care, or surgery that may not be available or treated in the country of residence, Or seek a better treatment in terms of quality or price, or travel to stay in a healthy environment suitable for the patient’s condition.

There is a type of therapeutic tourism, internal medical tourism that means traveling within the borders of the same country  seeking better qualified hospitals and medical centers. As well as traveling for treatment with natural sources such as salty water, hot sands, clay or sea, or other hot water springs.


It is based on responsible traveling to natural areas that preserve the environment and the well-being of the local population.

It aims to educate tourists and interested employees about the environment and nature and seeks to protect Environment, community conservation, and sustainable travel promotion.

Heritage Tourism

Is a travel-based tourism to learn about the history of a civilization in a particular place or country, to see the historical monuments and civilizations, learn about the history of people and places in those countries, this kind of tourism helps to bring tourists become closer to civilizations and history.

Culinary Tourism

 A travel-based tourism experience to learn about the food and drinks of a particular culture or country, preparation and buying the original taste of eating from the original source directly with no need to freeze and transfer, which means losing a large part of its original taste.

Sports Tourism

Is a travel-based tourism to enjoy watching the various sports, attending games in live in the stadium where it is held, or attending events and major sporting events held worldwide, such as: the world cup, Olympic Games, or famous sports leagues.

Natural and Rural Tourism

Based on the performance of tourist activities, the development of a rural and natural area, and stimulates all rural features from landscapes and nature.

The benefits of rural and natural tourism is the linkages between socio-economic contexts, there are many types of natural and rural tourism, including agro-tourism.

Educational Tourism

Is a travel-based tourism in order to obtain an educational certificate or graduation degree in a particular subject from a specific institution or to acquire the necessary expertise and skills in a specific field.

Educational tourism also includes travel to conferences, training courses and workshops Which contribute to the development of people’s experiences, enhance their knowledge in their work or study, and drive the process of self-improvement on an ongoing basis.
